These trials are depicted as golden wings tearing his flesh from his bones. He created a painting displaying an angel being weighed down by his earthly trials and self doubt. For the album artwork, the band desired to echo classic death metal covers of the past, and tapped on the shoulder of Eliran Kantor. Not only do the themes of PURGATORY reflect the personal and internal struggles of the band, but the struggles of modern day society as a whole, and the current lack of compassion amongst mankind. It is from these incidents that humans grow. Not a theological band by any means, PURGATORY is meant to represent the mortal experience of being trapped in a suffering state and left to brood stuck in notions of great loss and permanent scars that will ultimately define you.

Dont be surprised at some point, if MCA or Rocket finally includes this album in its batch of remasters, hopefully with the long forgetten b-sides which were considered for this album, "Conquer the Sun" and "White Man Danger."Ĭanadian Deathcore pioneers DESPISED ICON are back to reveal their 6th full length album: PURGATORY. All in all, there is no other Elton album which quite has the feel of 21 at 33, and it is this uniqueness alone on which I believe makes this an underrated album. It is one six minute long pop/rock/jazz/disco tribute that closed the chapter on the decade which brought Elton John to fame. "Give Me the Love," the closing track on the album, pretty much sums it all up. 21 at 33 is truly the last Elton John album that actually SOUNDS as if it were made in the 1970s. Elton continued on experimenting with various styles in the late 70s, incorporating the sparse production feel while at least being honest in his stabs in various directions. Many critics have said that Eltons 70s swan song was Blue Moves in 1976, but I have to disagree. But its not the rockers which make this album, rather its the laid back melancholy feel of the lighter songs, such as "Sartorial Eloquence," "Never Gonna Fall in Love Again," and the truly romantic "Little Jeanie." The production of this album does leave a lot to be desired, especially since throughout, Eltons voice seems to be somewhat seperated and detached from the background, but alas, such was the production styles of 70s/80s turn of the decade recording studios. Songs like "Chasing the Crown" and "Two rooms at the End of the World" bring out the old rocker in Elton, in some ways even surpassing the wild quirky feel of his early 70s rockers, albeit with a little less edge.

Considering that it was the first album since Blue Moves in 1976 which had a single that made a dent in the top 10, it really is an underrated album. 21 at 33 has the real feel of a comeback album.
